Healthwatch Cornwall appoints new Chief Executive Officer

Healthwatch Cornwall starts the new year with the appointment of Mario Dunn as CEO, joining the Truro based health and social care charity at this critical time
Mario Dunn Healthwatch Cornwall Chief Executive Officer

2020 has been a challenging year as the country and county navigated the difficulties presented by the coronavirus pandemic but Healthwatch Cornwall have continued to operate throughout this, maintaining its role as a critical friend to health and social care services in Cornwall.

Mario will provide strategic and operational leadership in what will likely be another challenging year. The implications of the latest national lockdown restrictions will undoubtedly put pressure on services and individuals as the county awaits the rollout of the vaccines.

Mario brings a strong CV with the skills to enable the organisation to take on these challenges with experience spanning operational and strategic roles in government, public policy, communications and marketing, leading large teams in the health and social care space. Mario was also listed by The Health Service Journal as one of the “fifty most influential people in the NHS”.

During the pandemic quality of care and ease of access to services in areas such as mental health, palliative care and dentistry have been major focuses for Healthwatch Cornwall, as well as its continued work with the Partnership Boards and Maternity Voices Partnership. Mario will join Healthwatch Cornwall as it continues the important work in these areas, always listening to residents of Cornwall to understand their experience of services and acting as a critical friend to NHS and social care during these challenging times.

NHS and social care services in Cornwall are under great pressure at the best of times. Now we are seeing a significant rise in Coronavirus infections in the county which will put further strain on our health services. Healthwatch Cornwall is here to support the needs of the public as they access health and care services. As the new Chief Executive I want Healthwatch Cornwall to help find solutions to the problems the NHS and our social care services face, be a critical friend where necessary and, of course, give credit for quality service provision where it occurs.
— Mario Dunn, Chief Executive Officer Healthwatch Cornwall
I am very pleased to have been able to contribute to the recruitment of Healthwatch Cornwall’s new CEO - Mario Dunn. He brings a wide range of experience both within the health and social care sector and from other sectors which I know will help HWC realise its vision for maintaining and promoting the voice and influence of the people of Cornwall. I am really looking forward to working with him as part of the board of directors of HWC, developing our strategic direction and supporting the team. I would also like to thank the stakeholders and staff who were involved in the recruitment process - I am sure they are looking forward to working with Mario as well.
— Jon McLeavy, Chair Healthwatch Cornwall
