In addition to our core functions we are continuing our support of Cornwall Council’s
•Learning Disability Partnership Board
•Autism Partnership Boards
•Older Persons Partnership Boards
•Carers Partnership Board (since 1 April 2018)
This followed on from Nuala Kiely joining us as the Healthwatch Cornwall Partnership Boards officer.
What is a Partnership Board?
Partnership Boards are 3 monthly meetings that are attended by service users and family carers who are ‘experts by experience’ in these areas.
Representatives from Cornwall Council, NHS Kernow, Royal Cornwall Hospital Trusts, Cornwall Foundation Trust and voluntary sector staff with direct experience relevant to each Board are also members.
What happens at a Partnership Board?
Topics discussed vary at each meeting and are responsive to current issues affecting services as well as ongoing work plans. These look at developing strategies and commissioning plans for health and social care. Recent work has included service users and carers working together and co-producing Cornwall Council’s Autism Strategy. The Carers Partnership Board is currently looking at information and ideas which will shape the new Carers Strategy. Learning Disabilities and Older Person’s Partnership Boards are developing future work plans.
Next Steps Review
Healthwatch Cornwall carried out a comprehensive review of the Partnership Boards in June 2018. You can download the full Next Steps report * or the Easy Read version. The review told us that membership of the Boards is not always reflective of our community. There were concerns that actions did not follow on from Board discussions. We are working to address both these important findings. A workshop was held in June to discuss future plans for the Boards. Service users, carers and self advocates together with professionals looked at the barriers to co-production and how we can overcome them in how the Partnership Boards work.
