Concerns Raised by Cabinet Member and MP Over Government Plans to Abolish Healthwatch
Healthwatch Cornwall would like to express its sincere thanks to Councillor Jim McKenna, Cornwall Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health Partnerships, for his continued support of Healthwatch Cornwall and for publicly recognising the importance of maintaining an independent voice for people using health and social care services across Cornwall.
We are grateful to Councillor McKenna for taking the time to write directly to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, highlighting concerns regarding the proposed abolition of Healthwatch and drawing attention to the importance of retaining independent mechanisms through which residents can influence services and decision-making. The letter reflects recent evidence published by The King's Fund and reinforces the importance of independence, transparency and accountability within health and social care.
We would also like to thank Ben Maguire MP for his endorsement and support of the letter and for his ongoing interest in ensuring that the voices of Cornwall's residents continue to be heard at both local and national levels.
While discussions regarding future reforms continue nationally, Healthwatch Cornwall remains focused on its core purpose: listening to people's experiences, amplifying community voices, identifying opportunities for improvement and working constructively with partners across Cornwall to improve health and social care services.
