Calling all heart patients – an opportunity to help improve heart surgery.
A cardiac research team at University Hospitals Bristol (UHB) is looking for two people with experience of heart surgery to act as co-applicants (as public contributors) for a new trial which is being planned. A pilot is currently underway and the team are waiting to hear if they will be shortlisted to submit an application for the main trial. If they are shortlisted, the timescale for helping with the application would be November/December 2018. After that, if the application is successful, the team would like the public contributors to be members of the research team.
In addition, leading up to the application, they are also looking for two other people as public contributors for the Trial Steering Committee (TSC) – this committee is in anticipation that the main trial will go ahead (but if not, this will be disbanded so the involvement may be time-limited). A Trial Steering Committee meeting will be held before the end of the year. The public contributors need to be different from the co-applicants above, as the TSC is independent of the research team.
- We expect the co-applicant role to require between 4 and 8 hours between now and December and may include travel to Birmingham.
- If the trial goes ahead and you join the research team, we anticipate a commitment between 12-24 hrs per year – some of which will be over the telephone.
- If the trial goes ahead and you join the Trial Steering Committee, we anticipate 4-6 meetings of two hours each over a three year period. This may also require some travel.
Both roles will be paid at the current rate of £21.15 per hour and any travel or out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.
