January marks an exciting time for antenatal education in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, as our first pilot area has been launched for the new Pregnancy Circles.

What is a Pregnancy Circle?

This is an informal way of delivering educational based information to service users.

  1. We are trialling the Booking Clinics and the 36 week appointment being delivered as small groups by the midwifery team.
  2. Pregnancy Café’s: Homestart Kernow are enabling us to offer informal, peer support groups- running with an educational theme. These informal cafes primary aim is to focus on low level mental health and issues surrounding loneliness for our pregnant families. Evidence based resources and videos will be available in this space to support signposting.
  3. Large scale, Royal Cornwall Show style parenting events will happen in the North and South of Cornwall. Open to all pre-conception up to 2 years.

Pilot

Our first early implementor is our way of connecting with service users and professionals to co-produce an offer that is equitable and sustainable. This will conclude with a report that will be made public in April 2023.

Next Steps

From April 2023 we aim to:

  • Launch more sites across Cornwall.
  • Train facilitators in group peer support.
  • Develop our approved resources and create a series of videos and podcasts.
  • Hold our first large scale parenting event.
